Executive Committee

KeSEBAE is led by its executive committee which is composed of a team of highly qualified professional engineers with vast experience in different engineering fields. Within the executive committee are several sub-committees which lead and advise the different sectors of the society. The society in promotion of diversity and inclusion recently developed the Young Engineers Chapter and the Women Engineers Chapter. They are led by a sub-committee which reports to the overall Executive Committee. The Young Engineers Chapter (YEC-KeSEBAE) is a lobby platform for junior engineers while the Women Engineers Chapter is network of women engineers, scientists, and technologists created to encourage them to pursue engineering as a career through an avalanche of forums that they engage in.

Prof. Lawrence Gumbe became a graduate member of the Institution of Agricultural Engineers in 1981. He is a Registered Professional Consulting Engineer (R. Cons. Eng.) with the Engineers Board of Kenya. He is a member of several learned societies including the Association of Consulting Engineers of Kenya (ACEK), the Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Kenya Society of Agricultural Engineers (KSAE), the American Society of Heating, Ventilating and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE). He is a fellow of the Kenya National Academy of Sciences (KNAS) and the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK).

Eng Prof. A. N. Gitau is an Agricultural Engineer (Registered with Engineers Board of Kenya) with over 30 years of academic and practical experience in: Agricultural Mechanization and infrastructure (Water; Irrigation and In-built) Development; Water Harvesting Technologies; Environment; Renewable Energies; Conservation Agriculture Technologies and Power and Machinery Engineering. He has held various positions which include: Lecturer and Head of Department of Science and Technology, Kenya Industrial Training Institute (KITI) – Ministry of Trade and Industry (1997-2001); Lecturer and Ag. Head of Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources – Kenya Methodist University (2001-2002), full time Lecturer – University of Nairobi (2002 to 2008); Senior Lecturer (2008 to 2014) and Associate Professor (2015 to date).

Eng. Jane A. Simiyu has over 30 years of experience as an Irrigation Engineer. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Engineering and a Master of Arts Degree in Project Planning and Management both from The University of Nairobi. Eng. Simiyu is a Registered Engineer in Kenya with the Engineers Registration Board (EBK). She has experience in planning, design and implementation of irrigation and drainage projects. She has undertaken feasibility studies, community mobilization, field surveys, social economic surveys and environmental impact assessment studies. She also has experience in management of funded programmes in the agricultural sector.

Samson Opanda is an Agricultural Engineer in the Engineering Services Directorate, Ministry of Agriculture GOK, where he has been deployed as the Center Engineer/Manager of an Agricultural Technology Development Center. Samson holds a Bachelors of Engineering Degree in Agricultural Engineering from Moi University and is the founder of Agricultural Engineering Cloud Repository, an online platform that allows engineering practitioners to share field experiences.

Prof. (Eng) Duncan Onyango Mbuge the current Chairman and Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental and Bio-systems Engineering, University of Nairobi. He attended Egerton University and University of Nairobi for undergraduate and postgraduate studies respectively in Agricultural Engineering. He is registered by the Kenya Engineers Registration Board as a professional engineer and is a corporate member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya.

Prof. David K. Some is well traveled and well read. He is a registered Enginer in good standing and many young and upcoming agricultural engineers in Kenya passed through his hands. He lectured at the Kabete campus at the University of Nairobi then moved on until the position he holds now at Moi University. We appreciate and take note because he has held his on in the academia in Kenya for the good of the country. He has been honored with an M.B.S. and O.G.W., he holds a B.Sc.Eng. from Newcastle in UK, an M.Sc. from Cranfield and, Ph.D. from Newcastle he is a Registered Engineer in Kenya and a member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya.

Professor Michael W. Okoth is a Chemical Engineer with vast training and experience in Food Science and Technology with emphasis on Food Process Engineering. He obtained B.Sc. (Eng) degree in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London in 1978. After a two-year stint in mineral beneficiation industry, he proceeded to ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich) for coursework leading to M.Sc. Food Science and Technology of the University of Nairobi in 1984. He later obtained a doctorate degree (Dr. sc. techn.) in Food Process Engineering from ETH Zurich in 1990.

Eng. Dr. Jedidah Wandia Maina, holds a PhD in Climate Change and Adaptation from the University of Nairobi, 2020. She also holds a Master’s degree (Msc.) in Environmental and Biosystems Engineering from the University of Nairobi and a Bachelor of Science (Bsc. Hons.) degree in Agricultural Engineering from the same University. Her Master’s degree was to establish the emissions and performance characteristics of a compression ignition engine operated on biodiesel from Cape Chestnut. She holds a Certificate in Energy Planning and Sustainable Development from the University of Oslo, Norway.

Prof. Japheth Onyando is a professor of Soil and Water Engineering and a registered Agricultural Engineer with Engineers Board of Kenya. He started working at Egerton University in 1990 as a graduate assistant. He progressed in his career and became a lecturer in 1997, a senior lecturer in the year 2002, an associate professor in 2005 and a professor in 2013. He has been a chairman of the department of agriculture engineering from 2011 to 2018 when he became the dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology in January 2018. Besides his administrative assignments he also teaches, supervises undergraduate and post graduate students. he also undertakes outreach programmes and expert services in his area of discipline.
